A cute friend of mine returned home after a successful surgery was carried out on her left foot due to her involvement in an accident few weeks ago. I visited her home located in one of the most serene estate Lagos can boast of. The black metallic gate gave way for me and I walked in confidently like I were the landlord. I paid little or no attention to the soul who sprang the gate open as my eyes were fixed on my friend who stood about 35 metres away; her smile was a little brighter than the sun, nothing seemed to have changed about her royal demeanor. She wore the same garment of grit, courage and beauty as always, save for her left foot wrapped in what looked like a white turban material even as she trusted a pair of silver-plated metal for support on both sides. Her armpits rested on the pad and her palms formed a tightly clinched fist around the handgrip. She was on auxiliary crutches.

We spent some quality time together; we laughed hard and we spoke with loud as well as low tones just as extroverted friends would do. She is one of the most inspiring female friends I have: a goal-oriented soul with strong yearnings for greatness and results like the desert thirsts for the rain. She cannot be found squeamish when it really matters. I enjoyed every second of my time with her as usual. I also played and had a photo shoot session with her walking toys (crutches) even as I listened to her piercing inspiring words.
As I perused the pictures, I began to swim in the ocean of thoughts —the deeper I swam, the more treasures I discovered and that is the purpose of this piece.
TREASURE 1: WE ALL HAVE CRUTCHES
Crutches are sources of help and support. As humans, we have weaknesses and often need help and support in such areas. There are ungodly crutches like addiction and other vices (strip them away as fast as possible). However, I am talking about some crutches within the code of honour; those that are part of the stories and process as we walk honorably in the path God has carved for us.
Crutches come in different shapes, sizes, forms and colours. When the hurricane of life hit us, we need shoulders to cry on and most importantly we need crutches to walk through the dark moment of our life until we strengthen our bones and muscles enough to walk through the corridor of life on our own.
If you belong to the ‘tribe’ of risk-takers, careless players who dare to lift weights beyond their strengths threshold, then you would likely break more bones that others, except you heed the voice of the shepherd always(that will save you a lot) .
Crutches could be in form of friends, family, Information or even a long stick with a padded piece at the top. Those who lack crutches when needed are always victims of circumstances; they hang around their inadequacies and live the rest of their lives in chaos.
Ecclesiastes 4-9. (MSG)
“It’s better to have a partner (Crutches) than go it alone.”
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls, the other helps,
But if there’s no one to help, tough!”
As a young man on the street of Lagos, I have made several mistakes and have had to suffer the consequences a few times and get away with it a few other times. The only reason I have the sanity to do what I am called to do, is because I have crutches to walk through the dark tunnels of life (sometimes, wheelchair to sit and push through ) .
We all also have our crutches. However, many are not using theirs because of pride, ignorance or something else. Beloved, when necessary, pick up your crutches and leap out of your mess.
I spent a few times with her crutches and I dropped it, my friend would likely spend few days or even weeks with them, but she would eventually throw them off. As a child, we all needed support (crutches) especially from our families as we learnt how to walk for the first time. They were happy and proud to help their little child daring to take few steps. However, if they had to support us to walk after 5 years, trust me they would be sad because that means such child is likely incapacitated.
If you are a football or sport enthusiast, you must have seen your favorite stars on crutches a few times. I have seen Cristiano Ronaldo, J.S Park, Michael Jordan, Miss Grit (my sweet friend) even myself on crutches. It is vital you discern the expiration date of your crutches whatever it may be, and make sure it does not exceed that. Do not get comfortable with it, nor build your life around your process. Friends, do not camp where you are supposed to walk through as fast as possible. Let go of your crutches when it’s time and walk into destiny.
Let go of those sticks and Walk in your destiny!
True independence happens only when you let go of your crutches.
Dedicated to my Sweet friend (Get well soon, Sweetheart).
