WE ALL HAVE CRUTCHES

A cute friend of mine returned home after a successful surgery was carried out on her left foot due to her involvement in an accident few weeks ago. I visited her home located in one of the most serene estate Lagos can boast of. The black metallic gate gave way for me and I walked in confidently like I were the landlord. I paid little or no attention to the soul who sprang the gate open as my eyes were fixed on my friend who stood about 35 metres away; her smile was a little brighter than the sun, nothing seemed to have changed about her royal demeanor. She wore the same garment of grit, courage and beauty as always, save for her left foot wrapped in what looked like a white turban material even as she trusted a pair of silver-plated metal for support on both sides. Her armpits rested on the pad and her palms formed a tightly clinched fist around the handgrip. She was on auxiliary crutches.

We spent some quality time together; we laughed hard and we spoke with loud as well as low tones just as extroverted friends would do. She is one of the most inspiring female friends I have: a goal-oriented soul with strong yearnings for greatness and results like the desert thirsts for the rain. She cannot be found squeamish when it really matters. I enjoyed every second of my time with her as usual. I also played and had a photo shoot session with her walking toys (crutches) even as I listened to her piercing inspiring words.

As I perused the pictures, I began to swim in the ocean of thoughts —the deeper I swam, the more treasures I discovered and that is the purpose of this piece.

TREASURE 1: WE ALL HAVE CRUTCHES

Crutches are sources of help and support. As humans, we have weaknesses and often need help and support in such areas. There are ungodly crutches like addiction and other vices (strip them away as fast as possible). However, I am talking about some crutches within the code of honour; those that are part of the stories and process as we walk honorably in the path God has carved for us.

Crutches come in different shapes, sizes, forms and colours. When the hurricane of life hit us, we need shoulders to cry on and most importantly we need crutches to walk through the dark moment of our life until we strengthen our bones and muscles enough to walk through the corridor of life on our own.

If you belong to the ‘tribe’ of risk-takers, careless players who dare to lift weights beyond their strengths threshold, then you would likely break more bones that others, except you heed the voice of the shepherd always(that will save you a lot) .

Crutches could be in form of friends, family, Information or even a long stick with a padded piece at the top. Those who lack crutches when needed are always victims of circumstances; they hang around their inadequacies and live the rest of their lives in chaos.

Ecclesiastes 4-9. (MSG)

“It’s better to have a partner (Crutches) than go it alone.”

Share the work, share the wealth.

And if one falls, the other helps,

But if there’s no one to help, tough!”

As a young man on the street of Lagos, I have made several mistakes and have had to suffer the consequences a few times and get away with it a few other times. The only reason I have the sanity to do what I am called to do, is because I have crutches to walk through the dark tunnels of life (sometimes, wheelchair to sit and push through ) .

We all also have our crutches. However, many are not using theirs because of pride, ignorance or something else. Beloved, when necessary, pick up your crutches and leap out of your mess.

TREASURE 2: CRUTCHES ARE TEMPORARY

I spent a few times with her crutches and I dropped it, my friend would likely spend few days or even weeks with them, but she would eventually throw them off. As a child, we all needed support (crutches) especially from our families as we learnt how to walk for the first time. They were happy and proud to help their little child daring to take few steps. However, if they had to support us to walk after 5 years, trust me they would be sad because that means such child is likely incapacitated.

If you are a football or sport enthusiast, you must have seen your favorite stars on crutches a few times. I have seen Cristiano Ronaldo, J.S Park, Michael Jordan, Miss Grit (my sweet friend) even myself on crutches. It is vital you discern the expiration date of your crutches whatever it may be, and make sure it does not exceed that. Do not get comfortable with it, nor build your life around your process. Friends, do not camp where you are supposed to walk through as fast as possible. Let go of your crutches when it’s time and walk into destiny.
Let go of those sticks and Walk in your destiny!

True independence happens only when you let go of your crutches.

Dedicated to my Sweet friend (Get well soon, Sweetheart).

  1. Crutches, wow. You’ve definitely done a good job with this. Well, crutches could be too hurt and burn or too cold and freeze you to death. People have had their experiences with crutches and most times prefer to limp and that’s from the human angle or even any other. Other forms of crutches rarely disappoint unlike the human form but still very important. As usual sir, excellent work. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much dearie… God bless you richly for sharing! I believe God sends us crutches per time. If you pick a pair of crutches yourself you may invite excruciating pain into your life. My friend, Dr Tobi Scott made me understand that crutches are in sizes, so if it is hurting maybe it is not your size. Let God choose for you!
      God bless you richly Chisomeje.

  2. I know you to be mean and almost heartless especially when it comes to ladies… For you to write things like this about your friend, the she must be special… Quick recovery to her!I learnt few things from the piece.

    1. Hi Betty,
I am 100% sure, our path never crossed in life. I would have ignored your comment but the fact that you take out time to read and comment makes you too important to be ignored.
It’s better I answer you myself before female folks who know me start replying you. Please do not judge people from afar… Don’t point finger in public with an unsure mind.
I love men and women alike, I also love pets(expect dogs)… I am mean and heartless to one person…. The devil.
      Live like you are loved.

    2. I can’t walk pass the comment and have peace… Olatunji Rockdweller is one man God used to change my life… Literally.
He is God-sent to me and my family!
If boldness is what you called mean then you are right!
Please, don’t judge who you haven’t met. Don’t allow his grace work against you.

    3. I have called to apologize and I hope your friends will understand that! All these reply are hitting my mailbox and that sucks and makes me feel stupid! Your reply made me feel like a fool and talking to you was crazy! I truly knew you not… I was wrong!
My African roommate, Francis Laju introduced me to your work few months ago and I have been following. She got mad at this comment and forced me to call you!… She is still acting like a motherfucker right here!
Believe me dude, you are so intelligent and exposed me to the fire of your friends… I felt alone and stupid. I felt cyberbullied.
I will keep following you up and I hope we meet some day.
      Please let it go!
      Peace
      Betty K

  3. OK Wordsmith so now I am smiling. Nice write up and if there is one thing I have learnt over the past weeks, it is that we all need to identity and use our crutches. I really believed I could breeze through life without them but I’ve learnt that they make your life stress less and easy. On the second hand learn the ones that you need to drop along the way my Spiritual Mom and Mentor calls them scaffolds. Don’t force them to stay it’s normal to feel sad when they leave but if the scaffolds are not removed from a buildings, how then will the beauty be seen. #teampurpose #Mom

  4. This is a beautiful piece….. I think you might be the next William Blake!!….. Inspirational yet realistic…. As a person with so little human relationships, I have learned a lot….. Pure work of art….

  6. I will kill for Tunji… Don’t try my real G!
I ran into him at Vegas two years ago. I was broken, vulnerable and dejected. He was the crutches I used to walk through my darkest phase of my life. He helped me out of depression and suicide thoughts. He introduced me to Andrew Wommack and got me books. He restored my self-worth back by showing me father’s love. Pure and simple. He can be weird, naughty and crazy but he is so prophetic!
