“I am a light sleeper, but as long as I’m wearing earplugs, I sleep well “– Britt Ekland
Yesterday at the Ignite Africa library, due to the renovation going on at the children reading lounge, some kids joined us in the advance reading lounge. I love kids who love to read so I didn’t have issues with that until one of them began to read aloud – however in a low tone. On a normal day, I would have asked him to read silently but I understood it could be unfair to a 5 years old boy whose mates were glued to cartoon network even at that point. Instead, I stopped reading, slotted in my earpieces, filled my eardrums with the bulged ends, I started listening to Tenth Avenue North, began punching my PC’s keyboard as I scribed.
Even though I tried to behave as if everything was fine, Mayowa who was busy on his laptop as if eternity depends on whatever he was doing at that particular moment unblocked one of the stuffs in his melanin-pigmented pinna and said “If I may ask, why did you drop the book and switched to your laptop instead?” “I cannot read and comprehend with this disturbance – even though it was minimum; I need total mute news to understand this knotty author.” I continued with a wry smile “combining music with writing is never a big deal.” I added “I would be fine, trust me.”
“Maybe you do not need earpieces, I think what you need right now is a piece of earplug.” He said with a look that showed he meant what he said. He unplugged his and showed me. As if he perceived me to be a niggard before saying. “And it is not expensive ooo”
My shock was not about the price but I wondered how would someone come to such a library with a piece of earplug; what sort of preparation is that? Ignite is always as silent as Blackley cemetery – tranquility at its peak.
Mayowa gave me further information about the earplugs and where I could get mine. Trust me, in less than 10 minutes, I got myself a set of earplugs even though I don’t know where and when next I will have to use it again.
I said all that to say this: WE ALL NEED A PIECE OF EARPLUG. Earplugs are a piece of soft material that you put in your ear to keep out noises (negativity).
Nobody is self-made, we are all products of influences oozing out of our environment. Words are the most powerFULL form of influence. Every word you listen to, either builds you up or breaks you down; no neutral word. You cannot afford to expose yourself to every word fashioned against you. You should be too smart to listen to everybody; not every content is for your consumption. In fact, you should not be exposed to every news. You need to be selective, separate the harvest from the thorns.
Your life flows in the direction of you dominant thought. As you think in your heart so you are. If you don’t like the results in your life right now, it is because you did like all the rain of words that drenched you sometimes ago and did not do anything about it.
When people say what negates your dreams and Vision you just need to block their words out of your conscious and subconscious mind … You need a piece of earplug. What you don’t allow to enter into you cannot affect you, what you don’t assimilate cannot break you down. You need to develop the skills of shutting down conversations that won’t build you up or engage your Earplugs.
Failures are banks of fearful information, they are loaded with impossibilities, they have 1001 reasons why people’s dreams cannot work and sadly they are generous with their poisonous information. Plug in and block them out.
I have decided to always use my earplugs. I will block myself out of pessimists, unfollow the ignorant folks and disconnect from negative people. I will only remove my earplugs when I am around those who inspire me, motivate me and add values to me.
