Sometime last week, I was with a friend when he received a distress call from someone who needed his help: his car battery was in a deep mess and he needed help as fast as possible. His car needed a Jump start.
My friend asked if I would be willing to go with him and I obliged. The trip was less than 30mins. Immediately the man saw us, he felt relief. ‘Finally, salvation is here’ was the interpretation I got from his facial expression. They unhooked the battery of the SUV we arrived in, placed it on the opened bonnet; because it was pretty late, I helped illuminate the dark environment as they did some wire connections with my phone flash light. In a few minutes, the car jacked back to life after few hours in comma. Just like that. The frustrated driver could smile again. The driver had been stranded for almost two hours before he eventually cried out for help. What if he did not get the help he needed? He might have been robbed or he could have landed in the custody of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, just to mention a few.
As we rode back, I began to ponder on the incident and I could see beyond cars: I saw lives and destinies instead. Many dreams have been shattered simply because nobody was available to ‘Jump start’ them when they needed it the most. Outliers are heroes today because someone or people invigorated them when they were out of juice. Like they say, ‘Nobody is truly a self-made man.’
- Life is all about relationships: Thousands of cars had zoomed pass the poor guy yet nobody waited to extend a helping hand. Perhaps he didn’t ask.
You were not designed to be on your own. Lanre Ijiwola captures it better when he said, “Purpose can never be fulfilled in isolation.” Woe unto the lone ranger because when he needs a jump start, he would be stranded in the dark. Your Friend is that person you can talk to when it rains on your parade. It has little to do with proximity but everything to do with relationship. We don’t discuss with those who are nearby but those whose heart and ours, beat at the same frequency. “I get by with a little help from my friends.” John Lennon . Everything rises and falls on relationship. Your network is your net worth.
- Jump starting is beyond brands: We rode in a Honda Pilot and that didn’t stop us from jump starting a Toyota car. You are a brand because you have a distinct name, background, experience and purpose. Nobody is exactly like you in the whole world. When it comes to giving and receiving help, God can use anything or anyone to reach out to you. Narrowing your source of help to a religion, tribe, age group or class is one of the most limiting factor known to man.
Be flexible enough in your thinking and embrace the people God wants you to reach out to and the folks God has sent to help you. There is no Jew or Gentile, no male or female. Don’t be too rigid like Apostle Paul. Beloved, racism is toxic and tribalism is a venom.
- Nothing is little: What did we do? We drove for few minutes, removed the battery and connected the right stuff and took the battery back. In fact, we didn’t need to give him a battery, the system can recharge itself and it sustains itself for a while.
Sometimes, people withhold what they have that can be of help to another because, they feel it’s little and might not be appreciated. Little drops of sacrifice can birth a might ocean of joy. Never despise what you can offer to the world around you. That little word of encouragement could save a life, that little money can mean a whole lot, even a genuine smile can heal a broken heart.
Many suffer wreckage of dreams because they lack that which you have in your hands or life but undervalue. It’s free to speak positive words over people’s situation, it is absolutely free to pray for our country and the world at large. Most times its cost nothing huge to jump start a life.
