Stevland Hardaway Morris, known by his stage name Stevie Wonder, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist. A child prodigy, he is considered to be one of the most critically and commercially successful musical performers of the late 20th century. Wonder signed with Motown’s Tamla label at the age of 11, and he continued performing and recording for Motown into the 2000s. He has recorded more than 30 U.S. top ten hits and received 25 Grammy Awards; one of the most-awarded male solo artists, and has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Stevie was(is) a huge success. However, his supernova has nothing to do with his talents or gifts, it has everything to do with his mother. She was his saving grace. He was blessed to have a visionary woman as a mother and friend. This is what Stevie said about his mother:
“Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.”
Lula Mae Hardaway left her husband with her six children. At that point, Stevie was 4 years old and he was third of the six. It must have been demanding and burdensome season of her life;raising one blind child is like raising 8 children at the same time.
Lula Mae Hardaway had the many options, she could have sent Stevie to the orphanage or welfare so she could have enough time and space to nature of her able-bodied children.I can imagine gruesomer options(I won’t dare spill them here), amidst many easier options, she chose the tougher one…. She poured herself into the little Stevie, taught him how to play piano and other musical instruments (imagine teaching a blind little boy how to strike notes and hit chords; It must be hectic). At 11 he had already penned his signature for a world-class record label. That is amazing! It is noteworthy to know that he was not signed out of pity he got the deal because his talents are refined up to marketable standard . He was world-class with the capacity to yield profit for the organization. (He was with them for about 50 years).
She influenced him to believe in himself, she impacted him to be fearless. She made him believe, he wasn’t blind. Stevie Wonder was never blind, his mother was his sight and his sight was his mother. He was never less-privileged, his mother was more than a privilege. He was never disabled his mother was his ability. Of course he could see the whole world through her. She wrote most of his early songs and hits. She was his mother, best friend, coach, and Mentor. In fact she was his University!
Lula Mae Hardaway wasn’t a perfect woman. Her marriage didn’t work out and she might be bag of flaws yet she was a woman of consuming Vision. When people saw a blind little boy, she saw a megastar who will change the story of the entire family, she saw the Grammy Awards winner and all the glory, she knew the whole world will rise up in loud ovation for her son someday. She saw the diamond in the dust and she put in her all to bring out his son’s inner treasure. A visionary woman is the one who can see the king in the kid.
“I said yes to him because I knew one day I will be a first lady.” Michelle Obama.
I am not talking about personal vision; Vision is a lifestyle; it’s an ability to see people and yourself through the lenses of the future. See people the way God sees them. Real Women see greatness in their friends and circle of influence. And if they cannot see a great future in someone they walk out of such life as fast as possible. In fact, they do not step into it at all.
Girls do have sights. They can see your phone, cars, bank account and other things which are obvious to everyone while women see the inner treasures and glory that only few can see and perceived. My friend, Bella puts it in a better way :
“To be carnally minded is girl and to be spiritually minded is woman.”She added “its takes faith to be a woman.”
Visionary women are always altruistic because they have foresight. The willingness to give their all comes easily because they can see the future and they are willing to part of the process (pay the price) until the baby is birthed.
Finally my beloved, If vision is the picture of the future then let us be the mirror that will reflect God’s glory in people around us. Let people see their greatness even clearer when they come around us. Visionary people help others birth theirs.
