THREE AREAS YOUR JOB SHOULD NOT AFFECT

LIFE

“There is no such thing as work-life balancing. Everything worth fighting for unbalance your life.”–Alain De Botton

Our job is the major part of our lives and it is God’s will that we add values with our talents, skills and gifts and receive something valuable in return (money, honour etc). Jobs are like sword and weapons in the hands of a warrior. They are of great advantages however, they can be destructive if not well-controlled and mastered and managed.  Like the saying “every blessing comes with sets of curses,” our work and job will affect some areas of our lives even negatively and that is just a side effect of being an adult.

Here are the few areas of our lives I strongly feel we should pay more attention to:

  1. Your Character

“If you really wanna know a devout Christian or muslim, workplaces are the perfect places to get right answer…Churches and mosques are too convenient to unveil the real man behind the mask. Place them in an environment where money, ego and power are involved” – Ayorinde Bamigboye (My elder brother)

Our work poses serious threats to our character no matter how we choose to paint it. You do not have to be a DJ at a stripper’s club, a call girl at the uptown brothel or an attendant at a casino to compromise your faith in this fallen world. All you need to do is to accept an employment from an organization where making money and staying relevant is their sole priority.

Since I was young and now I am getting old I have never worked (done businesses) with any serious organization that does attack my convictions in any way, most organization in Lagos promise beyond what they can deliver and sadly we have been bewitched to see it as strategic marketing.  During a hangout session with some friends, every organization in Lagos doctors her documents and compromise in one way or another just to reel out the paycheck and sort their budgets. Even though I couldn’t verify the verity of this statement, I found it difficult to disagree with it probably because I know myself and the organization I work with way too well.

I have grown enough to know that where two or three are gathered in the name of business in Nigeria, there is politics. As believers, the marketplace can pressurize you to be the man you have condemned all your life. I do not trust any man who is too engrossed or obsessed with his job or work because he will literally do anything to protect what he has.

I personally believe conviction is the foundation of every good character and the root of every conviction is spiritual. Character defect and lack of conviction is sign of unfed or malnourished spirit.

I strongly believe that the best antidote for this is constant spending time alone and your source… Retreat!

  2.Your health:

“I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you.”—Joyce Meyer

The only reason you were employed in the first place is because you were fit enough (physically and mentally) to carry out the required task but the irony of it is that the same work can wreak havoc on your health (or lead you to an early grave) if not well managed. Daily we involve in many unhealthy task and habits because of our job, some of us sleep less, eat more junk food, exercise less and most of us sit more. Sadly, many do not judge prolong sitting as unhealthy. Below are few facts about prolong sitting.

According to Research, sitting for long periods of time have several health concerns. They include obesity and a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels — that make up metabolic syndrome.

An analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels found that those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking. (source: www.mayoclinic.org)

In a more civilized society, organization hazard is a big deal but, in the society, I belong, some people and bosses judge you as lazy if you are not endangering your health for their sake.

If you are working and you are not resting, then you are abusing your body just like drug addicts out there. As humans, we are designed to function and rest when necessary. I strongly believe Rest and Good food bring satisfaction to God like pure worship. If truly your body is the temple of God, then proper facility maintenance is key else the temple will collapse prematurely.

Solution: Obey the RED (REST, EXERCISE AND DIET) principle

3.Your Relationships:

“I am blessed to have so many great things in my life – family, friends and God. All will be in my thoughts daily.” –Lil’ Kim

It is very easy to be committed to your circles of friendship and relationships when you have all the time better still when you are in control of a crust of your day. Picking up a job or starting a business means your time is no longer yours no matter how much you try, just like the legendary Nigerian musician once sang  “time na money.”

Lately, calls and chatting are like hewing down an iroko tree with local cutlass. It is hectic. However, I have tried to prioritize what is most important – Family and relationship. I have learnt to never what to be done be more important than those who deserve to be loved.

I have seen marriages torn apart because one part has been substituted with work or something else. Work hard but do not allow your job to poison your relationships with your friends and families. It’s too much of a price to pay and it is not worth it.

Learn to value everyone God has planted in your life and take advantage of the grace they carry. Invest and nurture in every relationship that invest and nurture you.

Good to have you back Rockdweller.
The continuous shift in the millenials survival orientation daily makes it even more impossible for these areas not to be affected.
You choose what area you can do without till you snap and then are replaced.
    Everyone does it right?
Thanks for delving into what’s lightly talked about these days.
